I am one of the lucky person who has got an opportunity to consistently participate in amazing Fedora community to drive innovation in free and open source way. This was my 5th flock after 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018. Indeed, it's great to see how many things has been changed in technology space. Values of Fedora still remains the same, Freedom, Friends, Features and First !!

For me the highlight talks was Denise Dumas on "Fedora, Red Hat and IBM". She very well explained how Fedora and Fedora community is very very important to Red Hat and it will remain the same even after acquisition.

Other than that i also attended all talks from Brendan Conoboy. He nicely explained on RHEL-8 planning side stuff.

It is interesting to see How Silverblue is emerging as a default workstation for future. (Though there are many challenges as of now)

Mindshare also evolved from planning to inception and going well now. Jared Smith provided good review of it.

Many interesting talks were in parallel and has to skip one to attend other. Need to go through few talks videos soon.

Notes on internationalization side:

On the language side, this was one of the best flock. We had overall 5 sessions on l10n, i18n and qe side. All went very well.

The future of langpacks in Fedora :- Its interesting to see how langpacks has evolved over time in Fedora and not it looks perfect replacement for yum language groups. We are planning to add more test coverage on langpacks side.

Use cases for Transtats in the Fedora community :- I missed this talk, since wanted to attend mindshare. But I remember the time when many translators were talking about string freeze break problems and now we have a solution as a Transtats. We can also track particular package for its state in upstream, downstream.

Defining a Fedora Goal related to localization :- In this talk Jean-Baptiste presented many interesting stats about Fedora translation community health perspective. In many aspects we are going down from past 2 releases from translations perspectives.

Fedora translation platform: validating the migration plan :- This talks come workshop was more from the expectations of Fedora translations community from new platform and also from few process perspectives.

Fedora Internationalization CI and Test cases :- I was lead for this session. Jens started with his short talk on present CI and Test cases from i18n side. Our earlier plan was to meet and start working on writing test cases but we got good number of attendees, so rather that straight going to workshop, we thought lets do the brainstorming on things happening right now and what we should do.

At the end, we decided to automation test cases, we execute in Fedora i18n test days.

Notes from the session available at Wiki

Few other interesting talks I attended were CommunityShift, Fedora Security, Candy Swap, Video of different language speaking Fedora contributors and Fedora workstation roadmap.

Overall worth flock with lots of networking, fun activities and lots of work. !!

We started planning for this one month back. Since we are doing this meetup regularly now, most of the things were known, only execution was required.

Following are the highlights

We started bit late. (Learning, next time should start late around 11:00am)

We started at 10:30am with quick introduction of all the attendees. It was really motivating to see few community attendees travelled from 30km radius to attend meetup.

I demonstrated about the new features in Fedora 30. Really though we upgrade but sometime, we miss to see the features. Also we quickly gone through Panteon Desktop.

Parag delivered his session on modularity. It was very engaging presentation and attendees asked good questions. Parag suggested attendees to go actual trial for better understanding the concept.

We took break after it for Snacks. Red Hat office was pack with multiple events on this date. walk-in interview + one more meetup. We got sports room, where we not only enjoyed snacks but also played games :)

After this Praveen Kumar delivered presentation on CoreOs. Though, he delivered slides prepared by Sinny but he explained things well. He also demonstrated Fedora CoreOS.

We had some time and Kushal asked audience if they have any questions on Qubes OS. He demonstrated it to attendees. It was good demonstration.

We had a great Fedora 29 release party at Pune, India on 15th December.

Following are the highlights of the event:

18 Members attended the event

I did a presented on Fedora 29 features. Slide Link

Parag presented on RPM packaging.

Followed by Q&A and nice Cake cutting.

After six months of hard work from many Fedora contributors, its really feel proud to talk about Fedora 29 features. Also specifically mentioning consistency of Fedora over the last 15 years. In 15 years we reached from Fedora core 1 to Fedora 29.

Parag's talk was very nice, it cleared so many basic things on packaging side including rpm, yum, dnf and spec file. In Q&A we discussed having this session like workshop and actually doing rpm packaging of particular package will be more helpful.

Learning's:

From the learning side, We thought we should keep on choosing different venue's for Fedora events. Its always easy to do it in Red Hat office but having it at different location helps to get new audience as well.

Also the planning must be start 1 month before the event.

Nice experience and Thanks to organizing members Parag Nemade, Suprith Gangawar, Ompragash Vishwanathan, Pooja Yadav. Thanks to Akshay Gaikwad for preparing image for Cake and all attendees for making it success.

I am always very optimistic to get more things done from localization and internationalization side during flock Europe rather than flock US. Can you guess reason?

Yes, due to more non-english speaking population. I am sure, many of attendees already experience, German language matters a lot in Germany.

This blog is more from what we are bringing out of this flock. Following are the points:

Transtats

Sundeep and Parag delivered this talk on the 2nd day. From the vision defined in flock 2017, this flock its ready for consumption. Sundeep has already provided stats covering important packages for Fedora 29. I am sure, Sundeep will write more detailed blog around it.

For members still dont know about Transtats. It is not a Translation platform, like Transifex, Zanata or Pootle. Rather its a best tool designed till date to analyse and track translation status of particular package during his lifecycle from Upstream (git etc), To Downstram (Fedora etc) and Translation Platform (Zanata etc) to what actually end user gets.

Off-line discussions

During discussion with Igor and Jens, we came to know we can have langpacks for each package. Presently with few packages, we are installing translation for all language defaults. Though it is in KB's but still to be more modular, we need sub-packaing for it. It will introduce many sub-packages in each package. With some macro, we can do it.

Also there are one non-trivial bugs from glibc locale subpackaing. i.e. at a time, it keeps both glibc-all-langpacks and glibc-langpack-en and other individual locales pack as well.

Globalization

We formed g11n group 3 years back to start more collaboration between, l10n, i18n, fltg and zanata but unfortunately its not going that well. Also we noticed, l10n does not have there own track and using g11n pagure instance only. Will create one for localization soon.

Hackfest

This went very well, Devel team demonstrated new features from them. QE team presented automation activities happening on Fedora side. Discussion happened on upstream first testing and available test cases for existing packages. Both devel and qe team agreed for more collaboration on CI side.

We also had discussion about Fedora modules translations as well.

More details about hackfests in shared document.

This was very fruitful flock, off course nice tracks but also the collaboration during the break between different groups. Yoga sessions in the morning was awesome, at least i joined on first day :)

This was the second i18n FAD with earlier one in Nov 2015 (G11n FAD). With the earlier experience of organizing FAD, we spent a good amount of time in planning and making this successful. This time intentionally kept it only for i18n to make it more focused. Thanks to Fedora council for approving budget, it was not only budget approval but further help from Bex for booking air tickets as well.

Participants for this FAD were from Poland, Germany, Tokyo, Beijing and India. This time good part was having more members with interest in QA (FLTG). This blog is specifically about my contribution into FAD activities. May be will have specific blog on communityblog to cover whole FAD achievements.

1st Day

On first day welcome all to the FAD (with Jens)

Given quick session about fonts testing automation, present state and what can we do during this FAD.

Filipino language support

This was request on pagure g11n to check whether we can begin Filipino language translations. I worked on it with Rafal and also Mike helped to it. We already have nice documentation about language support.

Only thing remaining was adding support in system-config-language. Reported on upstream with patch.

This was really interesting for me, after almost 7 years referred it. This task initiated interesting discussion as follows:

What is use of comps langauge group? We introduced langpacks to get rid of comps group though we still cant pull IME's and Fonts with langpacks.

Discussion with Parag, Jens, Tagoh and Me.

Options we have is to have Weak dependencies, DNF groups. But again questions Jens raised do we need it in modularity. We postponed this to Modularity session discussions.

2st Day

Font automation testing

Had good discussion with Tagoh and he suggested some alternative, one thing popped out during discussion is present Auto test module in Lohit is very minimal and we can extend it further. Jens suggested why package level testing? and not Fedora level all fonts testing?

https://github.com/pravins/fonts-automated-testing and completed it for SourceHanSansCN-Regular.otf, will gradually add other fonts into it.

3rd Day

FAD L10N 2018

This discussion started during Flock 2017 and Rafal shown interest in hosting it. Not got much time but came to conclusion good to have it aligned with either DevConf.cz or flock 2018. Will do further discussion on l10n mailing list.

Modularity discussions

Gone through modularity packaging guideline, this was led by Jens and he put lots of time into it.

Fedora 27 release party

Before FAD i was not sure, whether we will able to do it or not. We discussed and decided to do it during FAD lunch time, it was really good experience to celebrate Fedora release after long time. Points discussed were, to start Fedora meetup again, discussions on packaging, few members shows interest to become Ambassadors and conduct meetups.

Fedora 27 release party, Pune, India

I was happy we able to do it, though not very well planned from my side.

While concluding

Had pretty busy FAD. FAD is always great experience to have all active contributors under same roof, productivity is much more and off course how can we forget the fun part :)

Though in 3 days we did not able to complete all planned activities but we planned activities for the next whole year. Looking forward from all to complete post-FAD activities. !!

"How to make your application into a Flatpak?" was on the first day and delivered by Owen Taylor.

Its around 1 and half year we are observing development of Flatpak's and i am sure this is going to be one of the breakthrough technology for distribution of packages in coming years. I attended this topic to get more idea about what is happening? and What plan in coming future?

Session was very information and it was mostly from architectural overview of flatpak.

I will update my blog with recording once it get available. Meanwhile in this blog i am going to cover only Q&A part from session.

Question: If i install normal rpm and flatpak for same application, how system will differentiate between it?
Answer: In command like, application id will be different for one from rpm and one from flatpak. Both will appear and one can choose.

Question: Flatpak is bundle of libraries. Now if Platform like Fedora provide one flatpak for application and same time upstream also provide flatpak. Will one get replaced with other?
Answer: We cant replace one with other.

Question: I created flatpak on F25 and failed in Wayland, some permission missing.
Answer: If it is build for X11, it should work on wayland as well.

Question: Can we test flatpak on F26?
Answer: flatpak.org are there, we can download and start testing. F26 is very much updated.

Question: Are we releasing any application as a flatpak only in Fedora in future?
Answer: Lets packager decide it, if its working well. At least we are not doing this forfor F27, F28. Fedora 29 packages may able to do it.

Question: Whe we will have Firefox, Libreoffice as a flatpak?
Answer: Low hanging fruits first and gradually we can think or ask people for it. First lets get infra ready.

Question: Is any dependency on kernel?
Answer: Generally very minimal dependency on kernel, more for graphics driver. No, strong dependency between kernel and runtime.

Question: Can you consider flatpak with similar tech in android etc?
Answer: Idea of using specific file system is purely flatpak and docker/containers. Flatpak has more secured communication model.

I hope, i able to catch all the Q&A correctly, if anyone has to update anything about this feel free to send me email or just update in comment section.

Trying to be on the spot !!

Got a chance to meet existing contributors, who are doing great work and i am communicating regular. I help them and they help me. Jean-Baptiste, Zoltan, Noriko, Alex, Patrick, Fale, Gabriele, Justin, Paul Frield, Matthew, Ryan, Jona this list is bit big, so if i missed your name please consider its here. May be i could had written Team names.

Though G11N workshop was planned was on 3rd day but we were actually daily discussing open issues and how to get rid of it. It actually helped as a prep-work for workshop.

1st and 2nd day, i did not missed even single track and attended at least one talk from each track. My schedule is here, feel free to ping me, if you want more info.

We had good number of talks on G11N this time.

Please Note: Its not only APAC where there is need for languages other than English but its Europe as well. Only major issue APAC face is language with complex script. Europe most of the languages use Latin (extended), its make life bit easy for processing it on computer.

Talks and presence of more G11N members helped to make things more clear to other attendees and it actually help to get in new contributors. This is mostly from Translation side though but new contributors bring in new mind sets and help to improve processes.

I presented on G11N audit of Fedora Atomic and happy it was well taken. Since presently more focus on modularity and containers, its right time to get involved and make sure adding language support will not become more bottleneck during implementation period. We need more testing.. At least in presentation i have mentioned more visible issues and even possible solutions as well. Going to work on then in coming Fedora releases. Presentation slides here.

G11N workshops was really with nice discussions and more action oriented. We all agreed to have

Globalization steering committee for language related issues though need many fixes to proposal itself.

Mike Demonstrated IBUs Emoji typing feature and ibus typing booster multilingual stuff. these are key features in Fedora 25. Unicode 9.0 is already in Fedora 25.

Most of the members requested for T-shirts for G11N contributors. (FPL came as a rescue and mentioned it might be possible and depends.)

G11N FAD - More members are interested in hosting this :) Albania, Hungary and even Japan and India and i think some more locations. We have to coordinate with all and see how can we proceed for this.

Jean-Baptiste presented on improvements points and issues he gathered with Zoltan. I really liked those and even thinking it as a TODO list for Localization in coming year. We were need more time for discussions 2 hours is indeed not enough with many active people with different expertise, L10N, I18N and Zanata. I will be very happy if each members can blog with there TODO for next year, it will help to gather me improvements plan. May be we can push on community blog.

Summary is drafted in PiratePad.

I also attended famsco and Budget workshop. In FamSco i think we are agreed to move ahead with fosco without replacing famsco and start with minimal groups. In budget, fyi.. Budget is happens for year "Mar-Feb" next cycle is Mar,2017-Feb 2018 and we are almost in planning phase for it. Any things which required specific budget please start listing it somewhere.

Knowing this, its difficult to do G11N FAD till Feb 2017 requiring big budget. But if its less budget, good to propose it, there is always some chance. I am more oriented for doing virtual one till Feb 2017. Planning to having "Localization oriented FAD in Albania and Hungary", I18n oriented FAD remotely for F26 (Japan, Germany, India and may be other countries.)

Also we (with Jean-Baptiste and Zoltan) got interviewed for Radio stuff. It was really great to see, recorder was so involved in the interesting things we were speaking that he forgot to start recording and we again redone recording :) Exciting to hear recording soon.

* Though you might feel this is big blog, actually i missed lots thing into it, expecting dedicated post for each one.

Other highlights

Nicely organized Flock, in 2014 we were running whole day from Hotel-Venue-lunch dinner. Here it was same place, so actually gave more time for talks with other peoples.

Social events were nice. I loved it. In fact Location itself great. Nice to learn about Krakow history, its very reach.

Kudos to organizing team !! Joe came as a saviour for me in last moment and booked ticket in last stage. I confirmed my travel on 29 July, it is enough to explain pain. All other members including Bex, Rafel, Spot, Paul, Ruth there are many name here missing again, so please consider them.

Lucky to meet Ekaterina and David. After using and working for Gnome almost a 10 year, happy i became Gnome foundation member now.

Might be i will write other blog with some specific things, i think enough for this one. Thanks for reading.

Other talks with connects to Localization efforts are: Fale (Fabio Alessandro Locati) is talking about "A year managing the Italian Fedora Community" and Jona Azizaj and Justin W. Flory are talking on University Outreach – New task or new mindset?

Most important part is G11N meetup of all active contributors. Please join G11N meetup

There are only few highlights but we have also many active contributors present in conference.

Hats of for making it happen in India again. Most of the information regarding conference available at web. Though i am using Gnome almost 10+ years, this is my first Gnome summit and also mine first conference as a Keynote speaker.

Day Zero

Manav Rachana is big university with promising upcoming talents in the form of bright students. Its worth to making event Gnome Asia here.

Excellent campus

Workshop on first day was worth, Since i arrived late, attended last GStreamer workshop and that happened really in great depth. Excellent stuff from Speakers Nirbheek Chauhan and Arun Raghavan.

Day One

It was good to see Gnome contributors on stage. Quick introduction from most of the members. University lead by excellent peoples. Talk from K.K. Aggarwal was really motivating. Loved some stories from him, specifically Frog one - Good to be deaf in some situation.

Next Billion users for GNOME talk was good. Even i am sure with sandboxing, application will become platform independent and best one (most likely FOSS apps) will win Users. Amen !! for Next Billions :)

Though i thought we are behind schedule but case was not that, due to good buffer in lunch time. Happy nicely handled by organizers.

Here my talk started. As usual i tried to make it bit two-way rather than one way communication. Covered Indian language status and also covered how it can help to contributors specifically students.

After my talk: We had good lightening talks.

Post lunch we started parallel session. Ankit Prateek had huge slide deck for "Privacy & Security in the Age of Surveillance ". He covered very important topics, i am sure after his talk many attendees must have thought for there privacy on Web 2.0 Era.

Later there was talk by "Functionality, Security, Usability: Choose any two. Or GNOME." He invited developers for contributions.

Thanks to PJP, Pranav for managing Fedora booth during first day. We had good crowd around and good communication whole day.

Day ended with lightening talks. In the evening i visited Tughlaqabad fort with Tobias, Daiki and Raju.

Day Two

Third day i arrived bit early, had good conversion with faculty and students. Ekaterina gave nice keynote and provided most of pointers for starting with gnome contribution.

After Tea, i remained at Fedora booth. Had good time resolving queries from new users. I think overall 6-7 students installed Fedora in 2 days, mostly on VirtualBox. They were asking what's are the feature of Fedora? and i was like what do you want? :)

During August Manav Rachana planning for activities on FOSS stuff and they were collecting contacts from speakers.
Post lunch, i attended talk from Ueno on "Contribute your first application to GNOME" and Tobias on "Five years of GNOME 3"

Then we had again nice lightening talks and closing ceremony.

Conclusion

Overall Gnome Asia 2016 was good conference with good content and at right location. I hope we will get lots of contributors from Manav Rachana International university in coming years.

We had good presence of Fedora over all days. Missed Fedora 23 DVD's.
Second
day, Noriko introduced me with Jona. Jona recently conducted two translation sprints for Albania. Noriko and Jona both were at Fedora
booth on second day. Happy Noriko was in Devconf she helped to gather
contributors interested and working for Globalizing Fedora :) I also
spared sometime with them near Fedora booth. We decided to talk more in
G11N meetup planned at 4pm.

We started moving to meetup
room around 4pm. It was me, Fale, Jona, Noriko and puiterwijk. I earlier
thought it will be quick meetup but gradually we discussed number of
topics and it went on and on :) I learned lots of interesting things
from localization point of view.

Second G11N meetup at DevConf 2016

Unfortunately markers was
not working well and we started to add points to piratepad.

It was Networking
Party day at Starobrno brewery pub. It is big pub and party was on
till 2am but unfortunately next day my talk was there also don't wanted
to miss Denise and Matthew talk in morning. So with heavy heart back to
hotel around 11pm.

Day 3

From schedule itself i started feeling its mini-flock :)

Was
just in time to first talk, where Denise was explaining what Red Hat
looking from Fedora, which i often explain in Fedora introduction. Then
Matthew took over for State of Fedora, was happy with nice stats. Happy
we are gradually moving from guess numbers to actual numbers.

Relationship of Red Hat & Fedora+State of Fedora

Then i attended next talk from Matthias Clasen and Paul Frields, It was good talk and covered lots of topic.

And
here comes my talk, First of all it was Sunday afternoon and parallel
talk by Ralph Bean :) Even i was interested in attending his talk ;)

But
happy, most of the people interested in G11N were there including Remy
:) I made sure to make it more interesting by showing Voice Recognition Elevator - ELEVEN funny video demonstrating problems of non-globalized voice operated elevator system and
same time technical.

Slides of my talk are available on slideshare.
I intentionally avoided details on L10N, since Noriko's more detailed talk on L10N was next.

Noriko - Explaining huge tasks from L10N

It
was good after my talk there was Noriko talks, it came in natural flow
and few more people were there in Noriko's talk including docs members.

Then
i went for lunch, found Matthew alone there at booth. Had good
discussions with him on G11N, Flock and FUDCon and how to increase
contributors and also bit roughly talked on idea of having G11N FAD with
flock so more people from G11N can attend flock also they can have FAD.

Then comes final session...Grand Finale! Win Win Win!

Finale session.

Wow, it was hosue full
and great to see happy faces all around with excellent DevConf. I liked
the way, goodies distributed with easy competition. Though it sounded it
was not since, most of the people sat down after few questions ;)

Then bye bye bye to all. Wanted to attend EMEA Ambassadors FAD but i was very tired and also next morning early flight to Mumbai. Me, Huzaifas and Sinny moved to nice dinner at Pizzeria Al Capone to have Pizza.

At
morning 6am started tiring journey back to Mumbai. Thought it was 24hrs
but its always feels good to return back home, specifically after back
to back conferences :)

From registration desk to conference room, everything was well organized.

I liked Keynote on first day. It was motivating for all developers and provided key points about how to become "Rock star".

In DevConf there is no slot for lunch, rather they have live food counter for almost all day. One can simply go there as per his preferred time. It provided one more slot for sessions.

This happened in Fedora - Myanmar community office. Location is nice and ideal for hacking
We came around 10:30 but since few more people were stuck in traffic decided to start bit late. Cake was ready and then me and Leap decorated it with DVD's and stickers.

We started with introduction of all participants. Most of the participants were already Fedora users around Fedora 20. Interesting part was they all were more from the users side of Fedora, so decided to put more strength on how they can move ahead and become contributor.

As per schedule Yan started with introduction of Fedora. He talked on "how he came to Fedora world". He mentioned regarding earlier he was not happy with Fedora for not providing media codecs but later learned its because Fedora follows strictly FOSS principles.

Then Leap, started talk on how one can contribute to Fedora even if he is from different domains. I was adding few points with him as per required.

It was already around 1pm, so we decided to cut cake and go ahead with lunch. During same time around 10 students joined from "University of Computer Studies Yangon”.

Lunch was very special since it was home cooked by Wai Yan (John Reginald) and other Fedora members here . Really excellent place, you can cook, eat, work and hangout :) Appreciated cook and gang helped to him. Indeed very lucky to get in-home cooked food in Myanmar. Much much better than outside food.

Must say thanks to Yan Naing Myint for sponsoring lunch and lovely cake for Fedora 23 release !!

During lunch, we had some discussion with students, we got some interesting questions. Leap helped to answered regarding Admin side and me more from Development side :) I wondered no one from Myanmar contribute to GSoC.

Two students were from Tamil and one from Bihar and they specifically mentioned it, Glad to see Indians in event.

We started after lunch and Yan again started with Fedora intro talk. This time it was in Burmese language, he explained number of topic. Including how to get Fedora and what are Fedora philosophies.

Then we asked Leap to talk on How to contribute again :) 3rd time in 2 days he was talking on this topic ;)

This time even much better and had good impact on audience.

Then i started bit interactive talk on "What students required?" and "How can they get it from Fedora?". I mentioned one point during talk is to start using Fedora and start play with system and report issues. Also shown them what patch does mean.

Audience requested if they can know how to install Fedora. Here Yan started with demonstration of Fedora 23 DVD's. He explained in details most of the topic and in middle i highlighted missing things from Myanmar, i.e English (Myanmar) locale, no translations and recommended if they are interested they can contribute into it.

We all decided to take Tea break, while packages were getting installed. We moved to small local stall for Tea.

Then it was already 6pm and attendees were planning to go home, thought will quickly check newly installed system. Later Yan shown them how to create FAS, there name Wiki page and bugzilla account.

After everyone went we started working on testing Internationalization support for Myanmar (Burmese) language. I demonstrated few things to Yan and asked him to check with hall. Then we started creating Myanmar localization group, we completed all steps. Luckily we found noriko on IRC, she also checked those things Only thing remained was to create group in Zanata.

Around 8:30 me and Leap left from Venue. Mostly decided not to meet on second day, since we had flights around afternoon and attendees mostly comes post lunch session. Also our Hotel was bit far from event place and Yangon is also well know for Traffic Jams ;)

This way we had nice Fedora 23 release event. Next day planned more work by attendees to Fedora. i.e. becoming contributor to Fedora. But not much happened since it was working day.

Arriving at Yangon

Lucky enough i got a chance and i actually able to made it to BarCamp 2016. I had bad experience with Bangkok Airway during travel, that listed in other blog.

But its full of nice experience after coming to Myanmar. People here are very supporting and kind and indeed nice place to visit.

Our plan was to represent Fedora strongly with multiple talks. Me travelled from India and Leap Soak from Cambodia. We had 2 meetings before BarCamp Yan and his team mates.

Yan suggested to be at BarCamp around 8pm, so we will get slot quickly. I already thought its too early but since this is my first BarCamp tried to be early.

BarCamp Day 1

Me and LeapSoak reached early around 8:30 to MICT Park. Location was indeed good with nice campus and good crowd.

Inauguration started around 9am, we were standing in front row but not helped much since all talks were in Burmese language ;)

After inauguration, everyone started running to propose there talk for BarCamp. They were allowing only 1 talk per person. Me submitted talk on Learning Unicode. I thought there will be some voting on talks to get it finalized. But it was almost 13 parallel tracks and enough to accommodate all talks.

Since most of the talks were in burmese language we were simply doing networking there. During time i requested if i can submit one more talk and luckily got permission :) I submitted other talk on "Basics of FOSS and Introduction to Fedora". It was scheduled in main conference room.

We planned to distribute Fedora 23 DVD's during this talks but we actually forgotten DVD's at hotel ;) Our hotel was near to Venue so i quickly took taxi and collected DVD's for distrbutiion.

Felt good for getting chacne to talk on "Basic of FOSS and Introduction to Fedora". Got number of questions mostly on Fedora side. I felt few people were finding it difficult to understand either English or may be its our ascent, so Yan did transaltion for me for few questions. We distributed 50 DVD's to interested participants and also announced regarding Fedora 23 release event just after BarCamp.

Mine second talk was from 2:00 to 2:45pm. It was on hot topic at Myanmar that is "Learning Unicode" :)

Room was bit smaller, for around 20-30 people. 30+ students attended talk by standing. I covered all basics of Unicode. Number of people came after talk and said they want to move ahead with Unicode from zawgyi and need support from me. I forwarded my presentation to them.

Since all other talks were in Burmese, was simply waited there for some time and went to Hotel.

Leap mate with some old friends at BarCamp first day and we decided to go China Town for dinner, had good time with all.

BarCamp Day 2

Second day was bit relaxing. Reached to BarCamp around 9:30am, still came to know, they accepting talks around 10am. Attended there first talk, something like KeyNote. It had few impressive stats regarding How many people registered, how attended on first day. etc.

I submitted my talk on "Fedora Globalization - How to cater local needs" got 1-1:45pm slot in room 204.

Had one technical issue, projector cable was not working.
There was less audience, just thought will start presenting on Laptop. Again covered some basics on "why do need language supports?" and few other things. I mentioned we need some active people from Myanmar in Fedora Globalization. Meanwhile organizers brought working project cable and i moved to projector :)

Had over all good talk and lots of questions and discussion. Few more people again mentioned issues regarding Unicode and Zaw-gyi. I provided slides of my Unicode talk to them. I think there are number of people wants to move Unicode but i am still not clear what is issue. I think they are planning to write some article on issues. Looking forward to work with him on this.
Around 5pm, BarCamp had closing ceremony, where again language of communication was Burmese :) They distributed gifts with lucky draw to students.

Few key points

Fedora talks were well taken, students need more guidance to get starting with Fedora.

I thought BarCamp is more risky from quality side, but had good topics from so many people. Start-up was trending topic, almost 5-6 people talked on it.

May be good to have few more talks in English language, need more international speakers.

No internet, even for speakers

There was good marketing drive from companies like telenor and universities at Venue.

Many attendees. !!

Third and last day was more action packed. As per schedule we were planning to complete all activities by Lunch and have presentations from participants on completed activity post lunch session. Then F24 planning, FAD closing, followed by F23 release party. It went as follows.

I worked more on cleanup of Globalization governance group proposal and also worked bit more on Wiki cleanup.

Same time other activities were going on like Determining list of important packages for Fedora. While checking Fedora packages in Zanata instance, we started how we can better group packages in Zanata. This discussion lasted for long time. Its really complicated presently.

Situation is: Ideally fedora.zanata.org should have only packages from Fedora repos. But some package maintainers in Fedora also hold/lead the upstream of same packages. They decided to keep upstream repo itself in fedora.zanata.org.
Branch confusion: Upstream packages has only master branch and Fedora packages has F22, F23, master etc.. We give more priority to active Fedora branch i.e. F23.
Release: Upstream packages follows different schedule than Fedora. Contributing in master does not guarantee it will get included in Fedora XX release.

And how about packages only has upstream in fedora.zanata.org but those are not in Fedora. I hope, no such packages are there.

This discussion lasted for around hour, almost everyone jumped in. We came up with new structure and thought lets get back to other imp. task.

We discussed on improving String freeze and Translation deadline for Fedora. We had good discussion but later while thinking how many packages breaks string freeze, only name that came up was Anaconda. We thought good to track it and also there is already plan to have some script which can automatically find string breaks. It will solve the issue. I really felt this discussion was not possible on IRC and actual meeting help to understand most of the complexities.

It was lunch time. Sandwiches were there. We all braked for lunch but still few people were discussing and working.

As per schedule after lunch everyone was suppose to present hackathon summary and then start Fedora 23 release party. But....

We saw everyone was so involved in work and actually were trying to give finishing touch or wanted to discuss more. We decided lets extend it some more time. Rather than starting summary sessions At 1pm we started those around 3:30pm.

Finally summary session started :) We followed order given on G11N FAD Wiki page. Format was, what have you been working in last 2 days, outcome and plans for future. I am expecting more detailed about this in in individual blog and mostly will add these things in community blog of Fedora.

Everyone presented and it was around 5:00pm, We had still few topic pending i.e. Fedora 24 planning and official FAD closing. Jens insisted for F24 planning and we decided to drop Fedora 23 release party (I had prepared presentation for F23 features :( )

But decision was worth, we got an excellent list for Fedora 24 plan. Planning in face to face meeting and planning on IRC is completely different experience. Sometime in IRC only few people speak but here everyone was so into it. List is already in summary document. Anyway its not bad to Celebrate Fedora 23 by doing development plan for Fedora 24 release, so hats off to everyone :)

Then we started FAD closing session and it was around 6pm already, i would like to thank everyone since on last day most of the people want to leave early due to either travelling or some other plan but here everyone was there to see official closing of FAD. It shows success.

In last Fedora G11N meeting, we decided to collaborate on Fedora community blog post specific on G11N FAD. Hoping will able to complete it soon. Will upload more photos later !! :)

Took more time to write this than expected, thanks for back to back new activities for this. :)

As per predictions it was raining on this day. Temperature dropped little bit more. Thank to Jens for already mentioning this, most of the people were with umbrella's and for few hotel provided them.

Second day started with FPL's hangout. Meeting room speakers were not doing good join, so we decided just to project hangout on screen and dial in individually for listening and speaking.

Hangout went very well with Matthew explaining, high priority items like Fedora Atomic and its importance with the rise of competition. Most of the developers are still working on core development and not that much concerned on G11N part yet. Suggested for us to look into it. Me briefly mentioned on activities we are doing and who are present. Session ended with Q&A with couple of questions like i.e. how can APAC people get funding for flock :) and Can Zanata team get more support from Fedora Infra team. Nice and Quick hangout helped to set up of remaining hackathon day. Its always bit run for everyone of us to manage with different timezones, we succeeded this time as well, thanks to Matthew for this :)

First day discussion we felt Governance for G11N is missing and thought lets talk on it and sort out most of the things. Ok, background to this. There was Fedora localization steering committee once upon a time and they were resolving most of the issues related with L10N. But somehow its stopped.
In present scenario there are around 81 language communities. Managing them and planning for this huge effort need some committee. We prepared our first draft and decided to present this to council. Jens mentioned one major point, whether it should be Steering committee or Working group. Decided to follow up on this next day.

For Red Hat Forum 2015 Jim Whitehurst was in Tokyo and had meeting during same time in office. After his meeting he gave some time for signing copies of "The Open Organization" for RH employees :)

Most of the Red Hat FAD members used the opportunity and signed there copy. After couple of members signed book from Jim, Jim started noticing us saying, "So you are Fedora guy ;)

It was good to make some impact about Fedora activities. We took group photo with Jim :)
Changing meeting room and then again meet with Jim little bit distracted FAD schedule but i think its great to meet CEO. !!

Around 4pm we again gathered and started working hard on hackathon topics. Continued few discussions plus Zanata survey result summary discussions. We were thinking to have Hackathon summary for the day session but we dropped planned since everyone was involved in hacking some stuff and not wanted to disturb them.
Dunno how many of you know but Just in time was invented in Japan. Same way FAD day 1 started just in time as planned :) Everyone was at meeting points at the time. Information about G11N FAD available at Wiki.

It was nice feeling to meet team members we usually chat on IRC. Carlos and Alex was joining from Open Stack summit to G11N FAD but still were looking very fresh. I think one of the reason behind is Tokyo is such an excellent city keeps you fresh :)

One more members joined us from Japan localization group Tomoyuki Kato
for FAD.

Jens started with welcoming all and provided some basic information regarding FAD and we had quick round of introductions. Everyone joined #fedora-g11n

Sundeep was trying to join remotely but was difficult to arrange stuff remotely. So later enable telephone line and asked to join there.

Then i started with Fedora Globalization status and discussion topic. Slides are available at Slideshare We had some good discussion at the end of session regarding how other language communities manage things and what is misisng in Fedora. Most of us agreed for need of Fedora Governance for G11N, Easy to start guide for L10N and improving motivation factors for L10N contributors including Badges and reasonable budget for organizing sprints.

Later Noriko and Ani presentation on L10N status and discussion. Briefly touched to following points

Benefits for being Fedora L10N members

History of L10N.

Difficulties in finding where to start.

Wiki improvements/cleanup needed urgently.

Startup guide in wiki. Single page for all contributors.

Confusion in Zanata URL

Present as a G11N rather than L10N in Fedora groups now.

Lack of Fedora l10n resources and leadership

eg Mozilla and Open Stack has full-time person working on l10n coordination

Need to improve Fedora release schedule to get more language L10N.

Discussions were going on but we thought to good have further discussions in hackathon session.

Then Akira Tagoh took over and started I18N status and discussion session. Slides are here. He touched most of the hot topic on i18n including recent features, meetings, what are the important part in i18n. Later we had questions about how to propose new change proposal in Fedora, Bugzilla status.
Meanwhile Pizza's arrived, so being organizer plus key g11n members Tagoh-san need to run away so Jens took over.

Later we took break for lunch and had discussions on Fedora events and happening in FUDCon's.

One of the interesting thing was Khmer language sprint was active in Cambodia same time and gnokii and team was raising few issues on #fedora-g11n. Jens and gnokii planned to have quick hangout session.

Lunch after Alex presented on Zanata updates. He shown very interesting slides with lots of statistics and graphs. Participants asked for few more statistics.
Some of the discussions topics were

How’s contributor licensing works with Zanata?

All Fedora not got same branch name.

How to get release based statistics for Fedora.

Migrate bugzilla to JIRA. Create JIRA with tag Fedora.

Mobile support required for L10N of Japanese.

Then we started with our hackathon. We had so many important topics and were just thinking from where to start. Jens and Tagoh'san had created nice spreadsheet for schedule earlier but same time we were not much interested to force participants and be flexible with schedule. We split up into 5 groups and started hackathon.

Around 3 hours worked on various topics. I think lets each group write some blog post on things they hacked later.

At 5pm we had hangout with Khmer language sprint team. It was great one big group doing hangout with other group working on G11N stuff :)
gnokii, botreynisa and kuylim did good work on improving Khmer language localization. Happy to see they are working with objective to make Fedora 24 100% translated in Khmer language. So big +1 for it !!

Later we had brief summary from each members regarding how day went and what they hacked on during day.

Overall good first day. Tomorrow except Hangout with FPL we are going to hackathon whole day, so expecting even more productive day. Almost 00:37 here at Japan now, ohh FAD day 2 started already ;)

Stay tuned !!
I am sure most of you must be aware regarding G11N FAD happening from 1st to 3rd Nov in Tokyo Japan.

This blog is specifically to highlight present status of FAD.

All attendees travel and accommodation stuff done. This was most challenging part since Tokyo is very costly and managing everything in budget was difficult. Thanks to all attendees to agree for partial subsidy.

Tickets filed for subsidy requests.

VISA's done.

Venue room bookings done.

Schedule is almost done. Earlier we were planning to cover all topics in session type manner. Jens suggested covering it through hackathon will be more productive. Everyone agreed and now we have almost 50-60% time specifically for hackathon.

Lunch arrangement almost done.

Social Event - Dinner place not decided yet.

Fedora 23 release party. Had couple of issues for this but looks ok. 1st is Fedora 23 schedule slip by one week. Still we are lucky planning this exactly on 3rd Nov. :) 2nd Waiting for confirmation from Japanese Ambassador David (Dramsey). Earlier got positive response from him so expecting he will be there.

We are going to work on some cool stuff

Glibc locales sub-packaing

Automated testing for i18n and l10n.

Localizing Fedora magazine articles.

Review on recent Fedora Zanata users survey.

...and much more

I am sure we will able to complete some of these.

What should other do?
If you have any queries or nice idea on G11N side, feel free to send email to g11n AT lists DOT fedoraproject DOT org

Remote attendees: If everything goes well, one can simply dial in and listen all the presentation. Though remote participating in hackathon will be difficult but will try to communicate through irc. We already have couple of Remote participants.

For more information stay tuned on #fedora-g11n and g11n AT lists DOT fedoraproject DOT org
We have planned Fedora 23 i18n test day today. Most of the details are available on test day page regarding how to execute test day.

From the changes side we have 3 changes this time

Unicode 8.0 update

IBus1.5.11

ibus-libzhuyin

Basic motivation behind this test day is to make sure all essentials components for languages working fine.

Enconding's

Fonts

Default selected fonts are appropriate for languages.

IME's

IBus

Default input methods

Rendering & Printing

For complex scripts Left-to-Right etc.

Locales

Locale available with default installation

Its processing

fonts tweak tools

dnf langpacks

IM settings

spell checkers

Above are just few top of the mind things for languages. Requesting all Fedora users and developers participate in test day and make sure your language components work fine in Fedora 23.

This is my 7th event specific on Fedora after becoming an Ambassador. Ashutosh is already doing good for promoting Fedora in Aurangabad. He earlier did Fedora 21 release party at his institute and took number of topics around Fedora.

During FUDCon APAC we were talking about doing Fedora 22 release event at Aurangabad. Plan was to do it bit bigger with one of the major institute in Aurangabad. Thought will take some break after FUDCon and decided to do it in August. Ashutosh had initial discussions with "CHH. SHAHU COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING". Most of the details regarding Release events are available at Wiki page.

I have been never to Aurangabad and wanted to be there but was not sure whther i can actually make it. Most of the time during discussions with Ashutosh i was like plan as per your convenience and if possible i will jump in the last moment. Decided date as a 21st August and luckily me too able to make it :)

I think event we did happened in good time. Red Hat GLS team recently signed MOU with CSMSS for "Red Hat ACADEMY - Hands-on curriculum for academic programs". There is already excitement on Free of open source software's. We were even more lucky that Business Development Manager - Ipsita Chatterjee was there. She shown interest for supporting Fedora activities and ask to inform her whenever any support required.

Yummy Cake of Fedora 22 release

Coming back to event, Fedora release event i have attended till date used to be small scale i.e. around 20-50. This was an exception and bit bigger in scale. Around 250+ students were there. All the things happened very formally. Introductory talks from Principle and HOD of CSMSS. Then felicitation of guests. Before starting actual program we did release of DVD's and cut the cake.

From left: Ms. Ipsita C, Principle Dr. U. B. Shinde, Me, Mr. Ashutosh B, Pushpendra C. Hod. Dr. S. P. Abhang

Normally i like to talk on Fedora + Globalization. But since this was first event at this college. Talking on Basics of FOSS and Fedora was important. Started with basics of foss and introduction to Fedora.

Few nice moments

Then Ashutosh started with demonstrating installation of Fedora 22. Initially we started with netinstall iso but somehow it was not working well. Then we changed iso. in meanwhile we started asking questions to students and Red Hat GLS gave few goodies to students who gave correct answers.

I think demonstrating installation of Fedora is very important, specifically at places new to Fedora. It gives bit more confidence and also motivate person to try Fedora. After major steps of installation, while packages were getting installed Pushpendra started his talk.

Pushpendra Chavan travelled from Pune to Aurangabad specially for release event. He delivered talk on "Features of Fedora Workstation". During his talk he also motivated students by telling his own story about how he came to field of FOSS.

Lastly i did closing of release event by talking on How to contribute to Fedora and how it can help to students. This talk was well taken by students. It provided ideas to students regarding what they can do in Fedora. I also mentioned about recent proposal to council regarding providing certificate to students doing contribution to Fedora.

Unfortunately by this time it was already 1:45pm and everyone was hungry. We missed Q&A session. But still we were there for some time and answering to queries of students.

In the morning we mate with HOD Dr. Abhang and really impressed with his interest in moving Fedora ahead. We had quick meeting with principle where we had nice discussions on Fedora and open standards. CSMSS college is just in there third year but if one see progress its excellent. Management is very supportive and very much interested in Linux. They believe in Free and open source. Libreoffice is already is use by all CSMSS staff and they have already moved couple of LABS into Fedora. Infrastructure is awesome. Most of the latest technologies already in CSMSS including digital board. (At least i saw it first time). I mentioned to management about Fedora certificate to students for completing activities.

Special thanks to Ashutosh for taking initiative for this event, CSMSS Principle Dr. Shinde and HOD Dr. Abhang for hospitality and arrangement and Pushpendra for travelling Aurangabad for this event.

Going forward we need to conduct couple of session to educate CSMSS students further on Fedora. Soon i will discuss with other Ambassadors, Developers and plan one.

I always wonder how fast Fedora keeps on moving. I am going to Aurangabad, India for Fedora 22 release event coming Friday and at other end Fedora Alpha 23 released last week and we are going to execute Fedora 23 L10n test day tomorrow.

Coming back to topic on Fedora Localization test day. In last couple of months we formed Fedora G11N group and started to work in improving things.

Number of improvements has been happened for F23 L10n test day. Those are as follows.

Re-evaluated application list for testing. (Still i feel we can improve it further by discussing on devel list)

Test cases has been cleaned and improved for F23 releases.

Test day app is finally in use :)

Saying that now its time to test Fedora 23 readiness for your language.

As usual start testing process with L10n test day page This page has all the details you will be required. If any problem feel free to ping peoples on #fedora-test-day.

I know people are still returning from flock-2015, so might not get time to execute L10N test day. Though we mark particular day for testing, you can still execute test steps in your free time. For L10n test day we might wait for single or couple of weeks for evaluating testing results. Good if you can complete before it :)

I was part of FUDCon APAC 2011 but it was just as a speaker and attendee. After attending flock 2014 and talking with Tuan found that things are not very good from Ambassador perspective, not many people are active in India. Decided to become an ambassador and help to make it better. During same time more Fedora India members stepped up as an Ambassador in India and it created good active group of Ambassador in India :)

We started with couple of meeting before placing the Bid. Later won the bid for FUDCon and then the process started.

I volunteered myself for coordinating marketing and outreach activity. [1][2] Its 6 month long activity. We had so many meetings. Few planned, few unplanned. Tried everything that was possible from my side to make it successful. Even we had BoF at FOSSASIA 2015 as well to discuss on FUDCon stuff.

Learning's for me
1. Worked with lots of peoples. Its really great to see how people come ahead with passion for doing something for Fedora.
2. Learned smaller things to make event successful from marketing perspective.
3. Content and designing is very important to make event successful. We got good help for it. Need to involve people as early as possible for review stuff.
4. Timing is key. !!
5. Best thing in FOSS world is opportunities never wait for anyone. If one is unavailable someone else naturally takes lead.

Positive points from FUDCon APAC 2015
1. Major event of Fedora happened in India after 2011. Not any estimates yet on how many people attended the event but word has reached almost everywhere through social media, emails.
2. Attendees understood we have good Fedora developer community in India.
3. We covered lots of trending technologies in event.
4. Education panel was helpful. Education dept's knows about FOSS stuff but there is no connection between FOSS community and Education department. Red Hat through Fedora community can definitely help here to build this connect.
5. Most of the active contributors from Fedora were present and we had good meeting like one Ambassador BoF.
6. Its good that attendees and even organizers felt that we missed "xyz" things. It actually give more motivation to make it further better next time. :)

Going forward
1. Momentum is already there, now need to use it for more activities.
2. Now onward need to grow Fedora community through smaller events, mostly dedicated and targeted for specific audience.
3. Would like to see more "do" people rather than "talk" people.

It was good to meet many friends from different places. Ashutosh and team from Aurangabad, CDAC guys from Mumbai (Kharghar, Andheri). Surprised to see Sneha at FUDCon. :) Few students from Nashik. Sumit Bhardwaj who took off from Office to attend FUDCon. :) And i know there are many who just came to learn more about Fedora, so cheers for all.

Thanks again to all helped to make FUDCon APAC 2015 a successful event and specifically "FUDCon APAC 2015 team" [3]
Today we had first ever Fedora Globalization (g11n) meeting. Members from 4 groups Internationalization, Localization, Fedora language testing group and Zanata participated. To get background regarding this meeting see g11n proposal.

Due to less time we decided to discuss FLTG and UTRRS topics in next meeting. We are going to have our next meeting on 17th June 2015 same time @ 04:30 UTC.

Highlights

Zanata feedback survey

We are using Zanata as a official translation platform in Fedora. We need to do survey to take feedback from both translators and package maintainers. It will help us to understand need and missing feature from these different user groups. We agreed to do survey around end of august 2015.

By the next meeting we will have further updates on how we are planning to do it.

ACTION: mkim and apeter followup with lukebrooker.

L10N sprints based on F23

We discussed number of things under this topic. i.e. Minimum percentage of translations to declare particular language is supported or not. Discussed on language coordinator status.

ACTION: apeter to draft sprint proposal and send on mailing list for discussion.

Translation deadline around Beta

This was most debated topic. There is definitely need to look into this issue. Since after string freeze number of packages get updated. Its good to have some realistic and working deadline for Translation freeze. We got lots of suggestions.

ACTION: noriko to prepare draft for extending Translation deadline and send to mailing list.
